Hello y’all! My name is Harper Lapp, and I’m a junior at Telluride High School. I sit here impatiently, waiting for this summer when I will be heading to UofL’s Spinal Cord Injury Research Center at Fraizer Rehab Institute in Louisville, Kentucky.
The human body and brain fascinate me, and the opportunity Pinhead offered me to take my interest out of the classroom and into legitimate facilities was undeniable. I can’t wait to take my first steps into a genuine scholarly research environment and contribute whatever I can to neurological health and science.
My interest in this specific field is actually deeply personal. My uncle, Bob, was paralyzed in a car accident in high school, nearly 50 years ago, but despite his complete paraplegia, he is living a full and meaningful life. Reflecting on the time I’ve spent with him, his ability to overcome his situation showed me that he took no chances in letting his diagnosis define his course of life. This observation prompted my curiosity about what modern science could accomplish to remedy neurological injury.
Outside of my STEM interests, I spend many of my days in the San Juan mountains, wary to never take such a beautiful place to grow up in for granted. I ski and snowboard with my friends at the resort, as well as dedicating my time to instructing the adorable alpine shredders at Telski. But I don’t discriminate, I love summer just as much! After the slope closes and school gets out, you can find me hiking around the mountains and floating around Trout Lake. But of course, not all my time is spent outdoors; much of my free time is devoted to drawing, photography, and baking for others!
This summer will be quite different, though, but I am eager to make the change and learn as much as I can, sharing my experience with y’all along the way!
