Hi! My name is Akira Smith, and I am currently a junior at Telluride High School. I am thrilled for the opportunity to participate in an internship this summer in Providence, Rhode Island, at Brown University, where I will be working under Professor Nicola Neretti in the Biology of Aging Lab. I am especially excited because this experience will allow me to further explore my curiosity and passion for molecular biology. With this experience and my future STEM coursework, I hope to pursue my undergrad in biology, followed by a graduate degree.
Recently, I have been volunteering with Pinhead, where I spend my time helping kids explore science and encouraging their curiosity about the world around them. I also enjoy teaching kids creative outputs at the Ah Haa School of Arts, where I get to not only spend time with kids but also use Ah Haa as my creative outlet. Currently, I am working with linoleum in an Art Fellowship I am a part of, which allows me to express myself creatively while also advocating for important issues.
In whatever free time I have, I love discovering new things. Going to different places with new cultures and unique pallets inspires me, as well as finding the hidden corners of nature while hiking or camping, or even being able to creatively find myself through my ceramics and art.
I am so excited for the chance to experience somewhere new and to spend time doing something I truly love, while also continuing to discover more about myself. And, of course, I’m especially excited to spend my summer in New England!
