Hello, my name is Stella Coe, and I have had the privilege to be born and raised in Telluride, Colorado, surrounded by beautiful mountains. I am currently a Junior in High School, attending Telluride High. I am very grateful for this opportunity that Pinhead will provide me this summer!!
From a very young age, I knew that I wanted to help people and find ways to help humanity grow, flourish, and be well-cared for. I have a compassionate heart and truly want to see goodness spread throughout the world, beginning by working within our communities and doing the work that I can. In this past year, I have wrestled with wanting to be a doctor, nurse, PA, therapist, and anything under the umbrella of the medical field. In reality, I do not yet know what I want to do, but I know I want to help people. Right now, I am inspired by psychology and study human behavior and its relation to our physical brain chemistry. That is why I am so excited to study at the University of California, San Diego, at the George Lab, studying the science of addiction.
In recent years, I have taken classes such as AP Psychology, and I am currently enrolled in AP Biology- two classes I am constantly amazed and inspired by. I particularly loved the AP Psychology unit on the biological basis of behavior- it fascinates me that all of our actions and psychological behaviors can be traced back to a biological basis. I loved studying neurons and how they communicate, and the different effects of neurotransmitters. Therefore, I am very excited to study both rats’ behaviors and their neural pathways, and to be able to observe the different areas of the brain that are affected by different drugs. I hope to gain a deeper understanding in gene wide association studies and how that connects with addiction-associated genes.
Outside of STEM, I am deeply involved in theatre, sing with the Telluride Choral Society, getting outside and love doing yoga. Recently, I had the lead role in Peter and the Starcatcher, where I played Molly Aster, a witty, strong-headed girl and a natural leader. Some of my other favorite roles include playing Arvida Abernathy in Guys and Dolls and one of the doo-op girls from Little Shop of Horrors. Growing up in such a beautiful place, filled with incredible opportunities, has been a true blessing, and I am deeply thankful to God.
I am very excited to embark on this journey. Thank you to all of those who are supporting me along the way.
