Hello! My name is Samantha Abate and I am interning at UCSB in Santa Barbara, California. Throughout this internship, I am hoping to gain some experience with marine biology as well as learn a little bit more about California schools.

This first week has unfortunately been very chaotic. Almost everyone in the lab that we are going to be working in is gone on vacation for the 4th of July. We’ve been able to complete some things but it’s been mostly paperwork. There are a lot of preliminary steps that we need to take before we will be allowed to work in the lab. However, this has given us a lot of time to get to know the building, campus, and surrounding area.

A view from above the beach.

I am here in Isla Vista specifically, which is right next to the UCSB campus. My fellow intern and I are staying in an apartment that is very close to the ocean. On clear days, we can see it from our window! The beach is only a couple blocks away and we have already spent lots of time there.

My fellow intern, Emma Galleger is here with me. We arrived in Santa Barbara around the same time. Both of our moms were incredibly helpful when getting us all set up here 🙂 . We are sharing a room in our apartment and got to do all our grocery shopping and preparing together.

We spent some time in downtown Santa Barbara which is a really nice area. There were a ton of cool things to see there and really good restaurants. The weather here is also very unique. Each night the fog rolls in from the ocean and restricts the visibility to short distances.

The fog that rolls in almost every evening.

I look forward to what our next week here will bring. Hopefully, our mentors will be back in the lab and we can start getting introduced to what our next couple of weeks here will be like. So far, I’ve had a great time exploring this new place and learning more about working in a lab.
