What a fantastic week this was! I made a fair amount of progress on my coding as well as beginning to collect data using the falling head parameter I made. On top of this, the Fourth of July was a great way to spend time with people from here and get to experience some of the local culture.

My week began with a pretty long day working on the code for analyzing the effect of sampling volume on the Gutenberg – Richter relationship. I was very happy to see that I was able to generate a graph of the b – value (slope) against the sample volume. An interesting observation was the fact that the moving average of the b – value tended to trend upward before deflecting downward (concave down). I do not know what is causing this, but maybe in the coming weeks I can focus more on this specific observation.

The next day, I was able to write code to make a graph of the a – value (y – intercept) vs. sampling volume and a graph of sample volume vs. number of fractures. For some reason, no titles are showing up on the second graph. I still haven’t figured out why, but this is not very concerning since the scatter plot presents data that looks more or less accurate, forming a positive linear shape. This coding project has led to a great deal of learning for me and it has been super cool learning how much you can do with python!

On Wednesday, I went to the Utah Core Research Center. This was more or less a field trip, which was a very nice break since the long days of coding had tired me out. I learned about well logs, different types of rock cores and even got to see a a large section of dirt that contained numerous dinosaur fossils. All the people there were cool and it was fun to look at rock cores and see how the permeability can change as you go deeper underground.

The Fourth of July was pretty uneventful during the day for me – I went climbing at the local climbing gym – but the fireworks were very amazing that evening. Then on Friday, Dr. McCormack told me I could have the day off so I decided to go on a hike up to a lake near where I am staying (up Millcreek canyon). It was only about 5 miles, but it was pretty steep so it took a few hours.

Saturday and Sunday I spent climbing either in the local gym or up Little Cottonwood canyon. On Sunday I got to climb a fantastic four pitch route (Becky’s Wall to Pebbles and Bambam – fun 5.9). I also went to the gym five out of the seven days this week so it feels great to be nice and sore!
