Hi all! My name is Anna Countryman. I’m a junior at Montrose high school and will be interning through Pinhead at the Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix this summer. I’m so excited to get the opportunity to work in my field of interest through such a selective program. When I graduate, I’m looking to attend a 4 year university, majoring in biomedical engineering or biotechnology. My favorite class so far has been AP biology, which really sparked my interest in biomedical engineering. I think the cross between the medical field and engineering applications is so interesting and appeals to all of my goals and strengths. Being from a more secluded area, like the western slope, limits opportunities to explore interests like this. That’s why I’m so incredibly grateful Pinhead is giving me this chance to get real world experience and make valuable personal connections in my intended career path.

Through the school, I’m involved in the MHS Rotary Interact club, in which I hold the President elect position. This club’s main focus is on community service and leadership development. I’m also heavily invested in my school’s Future Business Leaders of America club, where I’m the treasurer and have qualified for the State Leadership Conference 3 years in a row, including 2 double qualifications.

My life outside of school is pretty busy as well. When I’m not studying for an upcoming test or finishing schoolwork, you can catch me hanging out with my friends and sisters or, most likely, in a gym playing volleyball. With that, my favorite (and most time consuming…) hobby is volleyball. I love working with my team and being competitive on the court. I’m a part of the high school varsity team, as well as Black Canyon Volleyball’s 17’s team. Playing at the highest level available in our area teaches me a lot about commitment, discipline, and pushing myself to be the best I can be. It’s also hard not to mention that my team is filled with most of my closest friends, so every practice, game, or event is fun and rewarding.

Me (#7) playing volleyball last season (right before our Final 4 run in the state tournament)

Almost all of my family is either currently playing or has played volleyball, so we spend many weekends at tournaments with big support groups. (Surprise! That’s actually where I’ll be this weekend!) With a volleyball community as strong and vibrant as Montrose, the amount of support for our program is overwhelming, in the best way.

I’m so excited to expand my knowledge of science and take on new challenges this summer, while learning independence and having chances at self discovery. I’m going to update the blog every week to keep you all updated on my internship when summer comes around. Thank you, Pinhead! Can’t wait to start!
