Hi all! I know this is a little bit of a late recap for April, but now that school is finally over, I have a chance to share everything I’ve been up to with my internship!
During April, the Smithsonian Youth Leadership Team held two virtual sessions. Unfortunately, I was unable to attend the first session due to a prior commitment, BUT my awesome leaders posted everything online so I didn’t miss out on anything that happened!
The first session featured Dorothy Berry, a digital curator at the National Museum of African American History and Culture. She provided insight into the behind-the-scenes world of digital public humanities, discussing both the technical side of archival images and the importance of understanding the stories and context behind them to help patrons connect to history.
Students in this meeting also selected the narrative structure style for the content we will be creating in DC. Our group ultimately decided on a Venn diagram featuring three overlapping cycles representing the pursuit of life, liberty, and happiness.
Our second session featured Dr. Krystal Klingenberg, a curator of music at the National Museum of American History. Her work focuses on highlighting the connection and impact of global Black popular music. She shared her background, along with the thought process behind designing visual effects, which I found quite interesting.
The second half of the meeting focused on further developing ideas for the content we will create in DC, where we chose three artifacts we’ll be focusing on: a Bracero hat, an Elmo puppet, and a skateboard design representing Wounded Knee.
In addition to the internship, I also had a quick Zoom meeting with Pinhead officials and the other history interns to start the groundwork for the Regional Summit that will take place in Ridgway this fall.
Outside of the internship, April was a productive month for me personally. I placed 3rd in Colorado at the FBLA State Leadership Conference and will be headed to nationals this summer in San Antonio to compete against students from across the country! I also spoke at a public forum where I asked a question to candidates running for state office.
That’s all for now!
