Hello! My name is Liliana Almanza Mendez. I am currently a junior at Montrose High School, and I will be interning this summer through Pinhead at Brown University in Rhode Island. I am extremely excited for the opportunity to work in Dr. Nicola Neretti’s Biology of Aging lab. I hope to one day become part of the medical field as a neonatal nurse. In preparation, I have enrolled in various science classes, including Principles of Biomedical Science (PBS), Human Body Systems (HBS), AP Biology, Pre-AP Chemistry, Child Development, and a Certified Nursing Assistant program at the Colorado Mesa University campus in Montrose. Overall, I enjoy learning, whether it is in a group setting or independently.
Beyond my school life, I enjoy spending time with my friends and family and playing soccer. When I hang out with my friends, we typically grab food or have movie nights. With my family, we usually go on hikes around Telluride or play board games, which, unsurprisingly, get very competitive. I have played soccer since I was ten years old, and I play almost year-round—from fall club soccer to winter indoor soccer to spring soccer with my school. I enjoy both the competitiveness of the sport and the quality time I get with my teammates and coaches.
Because of my deep curiosity in academics, I will be eagerly waiting for summer to expand my knowledge in the field of biology and take on new challenges while living with another Pinhead intern, Akira. Stay tuned, as I will be updating this blog throughout the weeks of my internship.
