This was my second week interning in Washington DC at the Rodham institute working in public health. I found out this week that I will be interning with a senator from DC in about two weeks, which will be an amazing experience.
Monday: I started my week with a day off from my internship to participate in the Women’s Strike at the Supreme Court. This was a life changing experience. I was able to be around countless women, all gathered together to support each other and fight for our rights.
Tuesday: On Tuesday I went back to the Supreme Court to attend a lecture in the court room that Tracie Bass, my mentor, had me go to. It was very exciting to be in the same room that Ruth Bader Ginsberg once sat in. Unfortunately there was no photography allowed inside the court room, so I didn’t get any photos in there.
Wednesday: On Wednesday I assisted the Rodham Institute at a health fair inside a homeless men’s shelter. We set up a table to take the men’s blood pressure and educate them on how to either stay healthy, or become healthy. I learned what the standards are for blood pressure, which is something I knew nothing about before. The rule is that anything 120 or below is healthy, 130-140 is above the wanted mark, 150-160 means you should get your blood pressure down to about 140, and 180+ means you should seek medical help immediately for the fear of a stroke. Most of the men fell between the 130-160 mark, there were 1-2 men who were around 120, and there was one man who was at 186. The doctor heavily suggested that this man go to the free clinic that day, but unfortunately he decided not to go.
Friday: I was originally scheduled to shadow the head of the Rodham Institute, Dr. Gigi on Friday, but it was canceled because she became too busy. So instead, my host, Joan, offered to drive me to the University of Maryland – College Park. This was very sweet of her, and we stopped at Costco while we were out because it was close by.
Next week I will have July 4th and 5th off because of the holiday, and on the 5th I am moving into an apartment in DC for the last three weeks of my internship.
