This is my first week interning at the Rodham Institute affiliated with Georgetown University working in public health. Over the course of six weeks I will be doing various activities mostly related to the betterment of children’s health in the underserved communities of DC.

The outside of MedStar Health Center

I started my internship on Tuesday June 18th and I have already been able to experience a lot of what DC has to offer. On Tuesday I met with my mentor, Tracie Bass for lunch and then with Dr.Gigi at the MedStar Health Center. It was very helpful to meet Tracie in person and I cannot wait to continue working with her.

Then on Wednesday I was not needed, so I took some time to explore the area which I am staying for three weeks. I was able to go to my favorite grocery store, Trader Joes which is about a 30 minute walk from the house, or a 10 minute bike ride. That evening I was able to visit Georgetown University with the host of the house I am staying in.

Coloring station I worked at for kids to draw “what a smile means to you.”

On Thursday, I met with Tracie and more women from the Rodham Institute. I will be working with each of them throughout my internship. I worked with one woman on Saturday volunteering with Colgate at the Barbecue Battle festival in which we offered free dental check-ups to children. We were supposed to be there from 12-4 but it was 105 degrees out, so we had to shut down about 30 minutes early.

Next week I should be doing more work with Dr.Gigi, as well as participating in the Women’s Strike on Monday June 24th.
