Hello everyone and welcome to week 2 of my internship at Long Table Farms! This week started off super fun with going to the river and swimming with a whole bunch of homies from Telluride. The Animas River, that flows through the whole town of Durango, is like a beach. So warm compared to the San Miguel in Telluride.
Monday at the farm we started the day with harvesting a plethora of veggies for the CSA on Tuesday. Michael and I harvested rainbow chard, cucumbers, and parsley! After all the harvesting and bunching we weeded for the rest of the afternoon. I ended my day with a little battle scar from running into a pole with some wire on it and ripping my shirt.
Tuesday is a fun day because we get to package all the CSA boxes and there is minimal weeding. In the morning we started by harvesting peas! After we are in the wash station all day cleaning all the produce, bagging, and boxing.
Wednesdays I finally got to rest and sleep in. We get to take Wednesdays off now from the farm because 5, 8hour days of manual labor was a lot to handle. It’s a nice break in the middle of the week.
Thursday we cleared a bed of old vegetables so the soil can be tilled and direct seeded. Direct seeding the the process of using a small machine to pull away the soil. place the seed, and then cover back up the seed.
After we cleared that bed we started a project of micro weeding some baby beets and carrots. Which is just some very meticulous weeding around the tiny sprouts of new veggies. At around 2:30pm it started to dump rain which allowed Michael and I to leave 30 min early. After the farm Michael, Tatiana, and I went down town and did some shopping.
Friday we harvest for the Farmers market on Saturday morning. I started by harvesting curly kale and kohlrabi. The rest of the day was spent bagging the different types of salad mix and cleaning and bunching scallions. For the last hour I weeded the squash bed. Friday’s is our treat day so this week a lady who works at the farm brought in zucchini cake with lavender frosting.
This weekend I am driving back home to see my family and celebrate my friend Larkin’s birthday!
