Hello, and welcome to my first weekly blog post. Happy to have you here. What a week it has been. My internship is off to a great start and I have already learned so much! I am interning at the Dorris Neuroscience Lab at the Scripps Institute in La Jolla California. My lab is studying metabolism on the brain with mice, and essentially trying to figure out what part of the brain gets triggered by food, and what triggers the brain to want to eat or not. To my understanding, in the future, this could help understand the neurological aspects that cause anorexia and/or obesity.
In my first week, I have accomplished so much. I have watched one of my mentors use the vibratome (the machine used to slice the mouse brain), used the vibratome on my own, watched and assisted on an exercise experiment with the mice by watching them swim and run on a treadmill, watched a brain surgery, and did my own prefusions.
My labmates have been so welcoming and nice. I am very appreciative of their patience and their kindness in welcoming me into their lab.
I have been biking the five miles to and from my host family’s house to my lab on some days, and in my free time, I have been going running to get my barrings for the neighborhood. I also attended a soccer recruiting camp one day this week that happened to be taking place while I am out here. It has been great weather, and I am really enjoying my experience thus far.
Thank you, Viviana, and her family for welcoming me into their home. Until next week.
