My fourth week at the Rodham Institute has been lovely, as has been my time in D.C.! This week, I was fortunate enough to participate in in-person events.
On Tuesday, Dr. El-Bayoumi brought me and the other interns to the Southeast Tennis and Learning Center. The Southeast Tennis and Learning Center was founded by Ms. Cora Barry, the wife of former D.C. mayor, Marion Barry. The Southeast Tennis and Learning Center was founded so that kids in Ward 8 (the poorest ward in D.C.) were kept off the streets and from participating in drugs and criminal activity. As part of my visit, I attended a meeting between Dr. El-Bayoumi, Cora Barry, and a data analyst from Philadelphia. The meeting discussed effective strategies to convince primarily communities of color to get the covid vaccine. The data analyst from Philadelphia had been collecting data of effective strategies to convince people to get vaccinated throughout the Northeast. Throughout the meeting, Cora Barry talked about “the vision” God brought her to create the Southeast Tennis and Learning Center. The meeting was, without a doubt, inspirational and motivating to one day create or lead a similar project.
On Wednesday, I managed and organized a webinar we had about College Admissions. The webinar consisted of multiple guest speakers including a college admissions officer from George Washington University and graduate students from George Washington University. The webinar was particularly helpful for myself, as applying for college will become a harsh reality quite soon.
On Thursday, Dr. El-Bayoumi, the other interns, and I went to the Kennedy Center. Earlier that morning, Dr. El-Bayoumi had breakfast with Hillary Clinton! During our visit to the Kennedy Center, Dr. El-Bayoumi talked about the events she had attended at the Kennedy Center, including a concert by John Legend. Later that day, I enjoyed lunch with the interns in Georgetown.
As for my free time, my host family and I enjoyed babysitting a neighbor’s dog for the weekend named Rookie. Given that I don’t have any pets, it sure was exciting! On Sunday, I went to the Natural History Museum and the African American Museum.
