I just finished the first week of my internship, during which I am staying in Los Angeles and working in a virtual reality studio studying computer science in filmmaking.
The first day was mostly paperwork and getting to know the people in the office. They even let me try out a headset to watch some of the films they were working on. I had never experienced high-end virtual reality and I had no idea how advanced VR tech has come in recent years. Plus, the films were powerful in themselves- commenting on everything from the melting icebergs of Greenland to the physical dangers of poverty to the psychological effects of solitary confinement.
My first task was to create an excel spreadsheet comparing different VR equipment, as they were looking into buying new headsets. I was to research the specs, capabilities, and prices of the different brands and then sort them by year of release. I didn’t realize how much I didn’t know about the world of virtual reality. Not only did one have to consider resolution when looking at headsets, but also refresh rate, motion tracking capabilities (3DOF or 6DOF), whether they were standalone or tethered, and so many other specifications. After just a couple days of work, I have already learned a lot about the world of virtual reality.
This week was fairly relaxed as I started my internship late in the week. I moved in with my first host family -a really sweet couple– on Monday. For the next few days, I got to explore the Santa Monica area as I waited for my internship to start. One of the people I was staying with is an art dealer, so he was able to recommend some museums and interesting places to look around. I was even able to take some college tours of places I was looking at going to. Not to mention, I was living about a mile from the Santa Monica pier!
Fabulous experience for you Jessica! Enjoy and glad you have some fun time in CA too!
