Hello Friends! This past week was nowhere near as exciting as last because all of my fieldwork was canceled due to bad weather. Fear not though, I still did some crazy exciting things throughout the week.
I started the week ready to get my hands dirty outside on a farm, but the steady downpour prevented Mikaela and me from heading out to Fort Collins. That was a bummer, but it was a fantastic day to sit down and really take a big chunk out of my to-do list. For most of Monday, I was researching alternative ways to manage food waste. By the end of the day, I felt I had accumulated enough notes to start the first section of my lit review. My Literature review is centered around the idea that proper food waste management can help solve the food insecurity issues plaguing college campuses around the world. The first section is about food insecurity around college campuses around the world and the amount of food waste produced by colleges and universities.
After work on Monday, I went home and watched a horror movie called Hereditary. For the majority of the movie, I was under a blanket with my eyes closed because scary movies aren’t my favorite. In the rare case, I emerged from the protection of my blanket. I was lucky enough to see the scariest scenes of the film.
Tuesday morning came quicker than anticipated because I had a hard time sleeping because of the movie. I spent the first half of my day in a meeting with Amy; she is Mikaelas Advisor and Mikaela. We talked about the goals of the remaining two weeks of my internship and what progress I had made on the giant to-do list they had given me. We also talked about new ideas for my research and if I had any experience with coding, specifically Python. After revising my to-do list, I set off into my day. For a few hours, I worked on my literature review; I revised my first section and began working on my second section. This section is about the adverse effects food insecurity has on college students academic performance, their physical health, and their mental health. I wrote until my fingers felt they were going to fall off, and then I moved onto the design process of the app. I sketched a few drafts for how I wanted the final app to look like and headed home.
I woke up on Wednesday expecting to go and get eaten by mosquitos again, but Mikaela sent me a text late Tuesday night that fieldwork was canceled again. I headed into the office and continued writing my literature review. Wednesday was pretty boring because I spent the entire day writing. By the end of the day, I had revised section two and gotten pretty darn close to finishing parts three and four. After work on Wednesday Liv, who is the girl I am staying with, and a few other friends drove up to the top of lookout mountain and had a picknick dinner.
After three days of terrible weather, I woke up to the sun shining and birds singing. All day Thursday, I worked outside (which was a mistake without sunscreen) on app designs. I was able to translate my paper drawings to a google drawing, which I was able to show Mikaela and Amy the following day. Once I put the finishing touches on my initial design, I began watching the six-hour tutorial on Python coding that Mikaela had sent me. I didn’t realize the havoc the sun had done on my body until I looked in the mirror and realized I was the same color as a tomato. On the bright side, I have a rocking tan now and maybe a higher risk of developing skin cancer.
Friday was more of the same. Meetings in the morning, writing until I decided I was bored and my fingers hurt. Eventually, finishing up the day by watching more python tutorials in hopes that I would finally know enough to begin developing the app for Mikaela and Amy. Friday night was super fun Liv, and a few friends decided we wanted to watch the new Toy Story movie. We ended up missing it and watched the new Godzilla movie instead. I heavily enjoyed the film because I have always loved the Godzilla franchise. I ended up having to do a lot of explaining to Liv because she had never seen a Godzilla movie in her life (so tragic, I know).
The weekend came quickly, on Saturday Liv and I tried to bake cupcakes which went horribly wrong, see the video and pictures below. We also managed to make a beautiful lasagna, but the tragedy of the cupcakes overshadows the triumph of the lasagna. On Sunday I decided I wanted to be active so Jackson, Liv’s brother, and I went on a bike ride in Evergreen. We saw a deer in the middle of the trail, and I almost hit a tree because I couldn’t see it coming- yay for bad depth perception! Following my bike ride, Liv and I went to a friends house where we made smores and played cards against humanity.
Ummm, looks like you could use some cooking tips before college😅😂😅. Way to show up and be productive K! 💕mom
