Week three of the internship has been good. Work in the lab has been a continuation of what we have already been doing. All groups of rats we were running are still running and no other groups were started. Though two of the alcohol rats may be done after this week, depending on what the data looks like so far. Also this week, Marsida gave Ry and I a paper on the neurotransmitter Nociceptin. The paper was a review, so it went over numerous studies on the peptide and speculated what the results of the experiment meant for the future of manipulating the transmitter and its receptor in clinical settings. Since it was the week of the Fourth of July, it was a slow week at the internship. We had Wednesday off for the holiday, then most of the lab didn’t come to work on Friday, just interns and lab techs in order to run the rats that needed to be ran.
Outside of the lab we had a fun Fourth. Claire, our host mom, took us to the La Jolla Country Club. There was a carnival, BBQ, and fireworks. We went to booths where we got our handwriting analyzed, where we were told that I am “physically frustrated” because of how I write my y’s and that Ry and Ty both have “go to hell k’s” indicating a rebellious spirit, and a fortune teller. We also learned that Ry is a rotten egg as he could not eat three burgers over the course of the day as Ty and I could. We also met a group of “militant Catholics” who Claire had over for an event. I learned that they do not like the current pope because “he is lost” and doesn’t know how to read the bible. This weekend we have visited the beach a couple times and have made good use of Claire’s pool. This is mostly in an effort to escape the heat, both outside and inside.
This has been a continuation of what has been a fantastic experience. At the halfway mark I am happy for the amount that I have learned, the new people I have met, and experiences I have been exposed to, and I am excited for the remaining half of my time in San Diego.
