My name is Finn Doherty and I am a student at Ridgway Secondary School. I am interning at the California State University Shark Lab in Long Beach. I arrived to Long Beach on the 28th of June and it has been an amazing experience so far. I began my internship on July 2nd, and my first day consisted of a lot of cleaning and feeding the California round rays and the California horn shark. The rays are being used in trials to find the effect of size and temperature on their metabolic rate. On my second day, I was able to observe the graduate students learning and practicing the surgical procedure to insert a transmitter using Atlantic sharpnose sharks.

I was able to practice sutures on a shark along the other intern I am working with, a high school student from the area. At the end of the week, I used drone footage to create 10 second clips of great white sharks. They will be shown to life guards in a presentation so they know how to identify them when using drones to monitor sharks.

I am so thankful Sarah found me an amazing host family that lives close to the campus. I am able to bike to the school and take the electric boat to the grocery store. Everyone has been so welcoming and I very excited to keep learning from Dr. Lowe and his students. This is definitely teaching me a lot about responsibility and independence…and cooking.
