I had another fabulous week here at the Tybee Island Marine Science Center and I think I am finally staring to get the hang of things. A typical work day for me is helping in the husbandry, acting as a gallery interpreter, or helping with other happenings in the morning and then assisting with Sea Camp in the afternoon. Although it sounds weird, I think my favorite part may be helping out in the Husbandry, even if it is just scrubbing tanks.
It may be in part because every day I just learn so much. Monday, Wednesday, and Friday are animal care day, so those are the days all the feedings happening. This week I was able to do all the feedings on my own, including mixing up the reptile (turtle) foods!
No matter what I am doing down there, I am always learning something. Thursday was also the Department of Natural Resources Beach Week, where they travel to a different beach each day. We set up a Sea Turtle Table, where you could learn all sorts of facts. Did you know, only 1 in 4000 Sea Turtles make it to adulthood.
It is absolutely a wonderful sight to watch how the kids learn and understand what is being taught to them. Every day in Sea Camp, it is a different bunch of kids and they are learning something new. One day we took them all the way out to the sandbar at low tide and they were searching the ocean floor for hermit crabs and clams. They were wading up to their shoulders, some of them still fully dresses. We went back to the marsh on Friday and they were all so excited! We spent the whole time collecting Fiddler Crabs and trust me, we caught a ton!
The weekend and after work is just as much fun as the work week, if not more! Lots of food to try, places to see, and books to read. Today, I explored the town of Savannah with Sonchia, who was the Pinhead Director before Sarah. She was a blast and the city is beautiful! That is a historic city with a lot to see. I also tried boiled peanuts for my first time, highly recommend them!
I cannot believe I am already one-third the way through my internship and I’m very sad to watch it go by so fast. I am enjoying every minute!
