This week was very busy at the lab! We continued to train the rats to press the lever. Unfortunately, the rats are not learning very well and so the sessions are stuck at one hour long. Molly wants all the rats to be pressing the alcohol lever over 20 times during the hour before moving down to 30 minutes. Right now the group average of pressing the lever is 15 times. Hopefully, the rats will preform better on Monday. Along with that group of rats, we have started training a new set of rats. There are twenty rats in this group. They had their first overnight session on Wednesday. Friday was by far the busiest day. We had five sessions of rats to run. The first two sessions were the 36 rats we had trained. Then we had to put Adam’s new rats in the boxes for three hours. We finished off the day by having two sessions for 30 minutes each. In between each of the sessions we had to refill the syringes, test the levers, and clean the boxes. I also got to see Adam use a fluorescence microscope. He was using it to take pictures of the brain we had stained earlier. It takes hours to get one high resolution picture.
hiking on the Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve. It is a beautiful area with a variety of trails. Megan and I hiked down two paths, one was a short loop that had great views of the ocean and the other went down to a beach. We hung out at the beach for a little while then walked along the ocean back to the car. It was the perfect length for a hike! On Sunday, we went to the farmers market for breakfast. After breakfast we went and walked around the La Jolla cove. Afterwards we went and swam in the pool at our house.
It is crazy to think I only have one more week left in this beautiful place!
