The second week of my internship went well, and I’m starting to settle into Santa Barbara well. On Sunday I helped Scott (my mentor/boss) put on his annual REEFiesta. This is how he thanks the graduating seniors for being a part of REEF and taking such good care of the animals; he makes them delicious tacos and gives them a folder full of old thank you notes from kids that visited the REEF in the past. It was great to see some of the people who spent so much of their time making REEF the amazing program it is!
I also moved host families on Sunday, which made Monday morning a little hectic. My first host parents left for an adventure up to Portland, Oregon, so I moved in with
John-Mike and Marcia Cohen, who is a huge supporter of Pinhead! They are wonderful people and I’m thankful to be able to spend the next 5 weeks with them!
Monday through Friday was a lot of the same thing. I helped Scott with a Professional Development for sixth grade teachers around Santa Barbara. Scott’s role throughout the whole thing was helping teachers understand the curriculum they will be teaching next year, and how to incorporate science into the math and English lessons as well. I learned so much from sitting in on the workshop, and it showed me how important it is to be able to make connections between English, science, and math.
I spent this weekend exploring Santa Barbara a little bit more. John-Mike and Marcia showed me the main beach in Santa Barbara, State Street (the main street in Santa Barbara), and a beautiful beach just five minutes away from their house. Sunday afternoon was spent lounging on this beach, grocery shopping, and getting ready for the upcoming work week. This week is the beginning of summer session, and Tuesday is the first day of official training at the REEF! Yay!
