I had the amazing opportunity to do a Pinternship in computer science this summer. While working with a Telluride-based web designer, 3D modeler, and programmer, Susanna Remec of YAM Productions, I learned many things that will help me go further down my chosen career path. We worked together to design a website for a company called South’s Market, which delivers food to small towns in Colorado – specifically Telluride and Ridgway – at a much lower prices than food is available there. I learned how to lay out a website effectively, all the interesting little details that go into it from design and technical standpoints, and exactly how tedious trying to find usable stock photos can be. We did hardware work on a lot of electronics, opening them up and resetting, replacing, or repairing the parts inside. This process varied majorly depending on the nature of the device. I learned quite a bit about open source 3D modeling programs, and I also obtained important information about how the industry billing process works.

However these are by no metric the most important things that I learned over the course of my Pinternship. That’s not to say they weren’t important, which they were indeed. However, the most important thing that I learned I did by simply living in a new environment. Many of the lessons I hold as the most important were the ones pertaining to how to live in a more independent manner comfortably. The whole experience was indeed quite comfortable for me, but not so much so that there was no pressure to learn and grow. In fact, it strikes me that, at least for me personally, it was just the right amount; and an overall enjoyable and memorable experience.
