Mackenzie Turrin: Environmental Engineering, Week Three

This week my boss Chris is gone again, so things have been a little slower for me because I have to communicate with him through email. My other boss, Barbara, is not as involved in my project making a sustainability plan for ski resorts, but she has been as helpful as she can. I left early on Friday because I had finished everything Barbara needed me to do and was waiting on a reply from Chris on what he thinks I should do with my report (leave it in bullet points or turn it into paragraphs).

As you may remember, I was also going to make a separate report on how the Telluride Ski Resort can be more sustainable, but I decided to just focus on making the original report as good as it can be before I start on Telluride. With my knowledge and basis from the original, I’m sure I will be able to assess Telluride when I get home. I just feel that it would be more helpful to the company as a whole to provide them with a comprehensive report that they can actually use to send their partner resorts.

I have been going to the beach on the weekends as its only about a two mile walk from my host house and it has been so fun!

My host, Max, took me to dinner at an (apparently) world-famous sushi restaurant called Sugarfish on Thursday and it was by far the best meal I have ever had. I actually went back the next night to have it again! It is traditional Japanese sushi, not American-ized at all, so there were no rolls, just the fish with rice and sometimes sauce. It was just so good!

Another eventful thing this week was that it started raining on Saturday! And it wasn’t just a sprinkle, it was pouring! My host actually went surfing on Sunday because there is a big swell from the storm. He said that people in L.A. freak out when there is rain, so driving on Saturday was a no-go. Apparently the roads get really slick because of built-up oil that never gets washed away (since there is never rain) and there are lots of crashes. I keep thinking to myself, “Of course it rains for the first time in  two years when I come here.” Of course, it is super good for them because of the drought and it will keep down the fires, so I really can’t complain too much. My last week here is projected to be rainy, foggy and overcast, just like I hear it is in Telluride!

Excited for my last week and looking forward to finishing my report, which I have decided on my own would be better in paragraph form.
