Things here at Protect Our Winters are speeding up.
For the first part of the week we struggled some more with the printer. We were trying to print these PowerPoint presentations for some resort packages we are putting together. They are going to 15 different resorts across the country and even in British Colombia and they are basically a resume of the company asking resorts to partner with us. It shows what we have accomplished, what we stand for and what we can offer the resort as a partner. I made the mailing labels my first day and last week I assembled the packages except for the presentation because we didn’t have a printer.
When we finally got the one we bought on Amazon, we found that this one didn’t work very well either! After a whole day working with HP Support, we finally got them to access my computer where they set up the printer through USB, because apparently the wireless at the office is not fast enough to print documents with more than one page. But then when I tried to print multiple copies at once, the printer stopped halfway through each presentation and started printing random gibberish instead. So I got back on the phone with HP and they accessed my computer again, except this time it just seemed like we were going in circles. She told me from the other end to see if it was printing a test page and I discovered that the printer had been off the entire time we were on the phone! After that it was a simple fix and I was able to assemble the fragmented documents and put them into place. I finally got to mail them out on Wednesday.
On Thursday my boss Chris told me to make a list of things our partner resorts can do to become more sustainable. I am calling it the Sustainability Plan. I’m almost done gathering the information but I don’t know yet how I am going to present it. Chris suggested that I take it a step further and apply it directly to the Telluride Ski Resort.
This was another four-day week because Chris is going on vacation and my other boss, Barbara, was leaving early to go to Joshua Tree for the weekend. We also had another intern start work. She is named Sarah and she’s from the University of Southern California. She’s coming on to help make connections between colleges and POW through the ski and snowboard clubs. Since she has to drive up here from USC, which is anywhere from 45 minutes to 2 hours, she only works 3 days a week. Chris said that I could work from home too because my commute takes at least 45 minutes. I might take him up on this offer because my walk is getting to be a bit of a drag.
This weekend I walked down to Santa Monica, which took like an hour and a half. I did a little shopping but didn’t find anything and then I went to the Santa Monica Aquarium and the Santa Monica Pier. The aquarium was super cool and I got to touch some starfish and a sea cucumber, both of which are slimy.

I also learned that the Pacific has a lot of the same kinds of fish as the Atlantic, which is what I grew up with. I went to the beach on Sunday and I’m so glad I did. It was super fun and the waves are so big! I can’t believe I didn’t get there sooner.
Can’t wait for another fun week!
