Today commences the second week of my Pinternship at Piasecki Aircraft Corporation in Essington, Pa. and from what has happened so far, it’s sure to be interesting.
The factory/office, about 10 minutes from downtown Philly, is aerospace engineering central. Dozens of concept designs are plastered about the walls, and every engineer is speaking the language of complex physics. Drawings for swash plates and engine parts are scattered about the entire area, and the factory floor is dotted with everything from flying 1940’s jeeps to the world’s first unmanned helicopter. Even more interesting are the projects.
Currently, Piasecki Aircraft is working jointly with Lockheed Martin to produce a combined vertical/horizontal flight aircraft for the Defense Advanced Research Project Agency (DARPA) called the Aerial Reconfigurable Embedded System (ARES). They are in the midst of a redesign for a rotor system. The days have been filled with phone conferences with engineers around the country associated with Lockheed, and office meetings on possible redesigns. Personally, I have contributed by putting together slides, drawing computer diagrams of short hand engineer drawings, and gathering data on force vs. degree on two rotor blades. Observing this process has been an insight into the professional world of engineering. Each week will certainly bring something new.
What a fantastic description of your first week! It sounds fascinating, challenging and fun.
Blog is well written and just the right length. Full of content. Thanks for sending!
But what I really want to know is, would you rather have an Italian Beef or a Philly Cheese Steak sandwich?
Love,
Da
