Since being here I’ve realized how much more confident I’ve become being on my own. It’s been a learning experience to try to do things independently, but I feel like I’m already growing a lot. I feel like I’ve already become more confident dealing with horses in just a few days. Doing a lot of the outside treatments, you do a lot of different horses that you have to get used to. Some of the foals can be difficult to catch and you have to make them stand still for treatments. So far this week has been pretty relaxed, they haven’t had many emergency horses come in. We had a mom and baby miniature donkeys come in with strangles and they are just the cutest. Strangles is a highly contagious bacterial infection of the upper airway. I’ve been making up quite a few vitamin jugs for horses with colic. You hook the vitamin jug up to the catheter and let it run into the horse before it fully runs out because you do not want to get oxygen into the line. Drip jugs hang right above the horse, they have a long tube that is attached to the horse. You have to secure the end of the tube to the horse or else the horse could spin out of it and possibly bleed. One of the ICU technicians explained to me that they’ve had multiple cases where this has happened before. I’m excited to keep learning and have more experiences throughout this journey!
Since being on this journey and being on my feet all day I’ve learned that you need to also keep yourself healthy! on the weekends I’ve been cooking good healthy meals that are within my budget. I cooked the salmon from the pinhead cooking class and it was so good!
This is a nebulizer that we use on a lot of the horses to help with their lungs.
