This past week has been a total whirlwind. Everyone has been settling in, finding people that they connect with, and starting larger projects. In the morning program, multiple students moved up to the Unity game engine, which I have some proficiency with. It has been so fun and rewarding to help them and watch them reach their goals.
It’s been surprising to me how well everything runs here, with few behavior problems each day. Working with my team and watching these kids learn, interact, and connect has been truly lovely.
In the afternoons, after-care has been going extremely well. We have completed almost all of the students’ movies, and the engagement has been very high. One of my coworkers and I have been working together in Blender with the students. We discovered this tool called Rokoko Vision, which uses a recording of someone moving as well as AI to capture motion to a digital armature. This tool is 100% free and extremely powerful. It has been a lifesaver when it comes to speed in producing these short films.
On Thursday this week, we took the kids across the hall to Dreamscape Learn, a learning platform in VR used to train ASU students in concepts of biology, chemistry, and other sciences using the setting of the Alien Zoo. This experience is incredibly immersive. The kids absolutely loved it, (even though a couple of them got sick) and so did the staff. It was so fun and none of us can wait to do it again.
I’ve been busy all day every day this week, so when I get home I’m usually very tired, but there’s usually time for a game of Hearts and an episode of a show with my grandparents every night. It’s been absolutely wonderful, and I can’t wait to start my next and final week with the kids.
