Hello all! My name is Garrett, and I’m currently completing my internship at the Media and Immersive eXperience Center in Mesa, Arizona. My time here is divided into two parts. The first is a three-week summer camp with the goal of teaching game development techniques and tools to neurodivergent youth with ASD. This week was all training for this camp, and I was at the MIX for about 3-4 hours each day with my team. There isn’t too much to say about this training, but I did get to go on a tour of the facility that blew my mind. The MIX center is a joint project between ASU and the city of Mesa, and its primary purpose is the production of movies, games, shows, and immersive virtual experiences. The building has two screening rooms, a fabrication lab with many 3D printers, a wood shop, sound stages, editing bays, computer labs, and much more. My favorite room contains a massive system of screens called a Volume, which is effectively the next evolution of chromakeying.
I also got to learn to use Endless Studios’ (the company that organized this camp) proprietary game-making tool, called Endstar. It’s a surprisingly powerful and easy-to-use platform that everyone has access to! If anyone would like to try it out, they can find it at Endless Studios’ Website. This tool is still in its development stages, but I’m excited to help teach it to the students beginning next week.
Other little highlights of this week are that I got back into drawing and I bought a limited edition version of twenty one pilots’ new album.
That’s all I’ve got, but next week is sure to be jam-packed!
