My last week went by very quickly, I continued treating the horses at the different barns. This consisted mostly of doing physicals, giving oral medicine, lavages, cold hosing horses, and putting a nebulizer on horses. They have multiple barns and many horses in these barns where you’re constantly on your feet. Doing outside treatments was kind of difficult because you had to deal with a few difficult horses/colts and be out in the heat all the time. This horse had flesh-eating bacteria, they put maggots in the abscess of the horse to eat away the dead tissue. We used a bemer blanket on the horse, Louise. It’s used as a therapy blanket for the vascular treatment of equine athletes.
Lots of the horses that I loved became healthy and were able to go back home! I’m happy I was able to experience this internship even though the hours were long. I’m glad for the people I’ve met along the way at Outlaw Equine, they were all so sweet and made my time there better. I’m glad I was able to experience time on my own as a growing individual. This internship has made me unsure if this is still the career I want to pursue, however, I’m glad I’ve finished it all the way through.
