Today marks the end of the fourth week of my internship at the MIX Center, and my final week working with Camp Level Up to teach game design concepts to neurodivergent youth. I’m a little sad that I won’t get to see our students again, but I’m also extremely proud of their growth and how I was able to help. I’m also ready to relax a little bit.
The week started with students deciding what their final project would be, and the program they would use to build it. Only a few chose Unity, which was helpful because I was able to give a bit more one-on-one support to those who needed it. It was frustrating for some, but over the course of the week, most of them learned enough to be nearly self-sufficient.
In after-care, the short films were already nearly complete by Monday, so the week was mostly devoted to fun and games. Two of my coworkers and I have been working on completing all the puzzles in a box set of eight, and we finished all but two of them in the hour-long lunch/cool-off time we shared with the kids.
On Thursday, the “splash pad” (a single sad water feature in front of the MIX) was running, so we took the kids down and it was nice to be outside for a change, despite the 111-degree heat.
Finally, the week ended with a huge showcase of what the kids had made over the course of the last three weeks, and it was interesting and fun to meet some of the parents. Overall the showcase was a major success, and it was really rewarding to watch. All the parents seemed very pleased, and the kids were proud. In addition, there were cookies, and they were a huge hit.
