As the title states, it’s been three weeks since I arrived in Boulder for my internship. It has felt a lot shorter than I anticipated, even so, I have learned much more than I could have imagined. I followed the same routine, as usual, I went to the IBS (Institute of Behavioral Science), I did research, and I took notes on unfamiliar legal terms, patterns, and questions.
Since my mentor is unable to meet with me every day, we decided to do weekly check-ins. I email him and his team my notes from the week. Jemil, a law student, working on this research project is more familiar with the law aspect of the research, so he has been answering many of my questions related to the Bloomberg Law database. His explanations helped satisfy some of my curiosity. For example, my mentor and I could not figure out why certain cases had a list of charges with a pending status while overall status of the case read closed. It was because the case was either still in progress or it was thrown out the window. His explanation to small questions are mind blowing and make me feel more confident in my research.
There has been a complication with my research. CU Boulder pays for its law students’ accounts. Each account gives its law students full and free access to everything in a majority of cases, with some expectations. For many cases, I have only been able to view the charges, but nothing else is available. We do not want to infer from solely the charges so, we scheduled a meeting with the CU librarian for this week, in hopes resolving the issue. And Finally, I found time to complete my mentor’s book, ‘On Gangs.’
Other than researching, I have been spending my free time watching Bollywood movies, and listening to Hindi music while I go on runs. And I rode on the city bus for the first time in years, which was pretty nostalgic.
