Hello everyone, I’m Taylor Holmes. I’m a Pintern from Telluride, Colorado. I’m spending several weeks this summer at the University of Utah in Salt Lake, interning with the Department of Environmental Engineering and Energy and Geoscience. When I started working Monday, we went into “The Cave” to visit the PICARRO, which is a gas detector that precisely measures carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2), and methane (CH4). We are looking to buy other gas detectors, specifically methane detectors, to be able to find leaks in gas lines. The other interns who arrived last week presented their slideshows on the different types of methane detectors. For the rest of the week, we worked with the PICARRO, getting price quotes for the methane detectors, getting some lessons, and working on our own to learn some python. Next week we are looking to bring the PICARRO on the roof to mess around with it and test carbon dioxide while we wait for the next methane detector.
