My name is Olivia Hatcher, and I am studying biochemistry at UCSD this summer. My first week has been some what crazy between my wonderful host family and my internship. The first couple of days of my internship were filled with paper work and safety trainings. Once I completed those, I learned some new chemistry such as how buffers are made, and what pKa is, which I applied to my studies in the lab. After that, I was able to go into the lab and make a buffer solution and a stock solution of NATA (N-acetyl-tryptophan-amide). This was amazing, and my first real experience in a lab. Finally, I was able to collect data on the different samples that I made using the buffer and NATA solutions. I took data using an absorption spectrophotometer and a fluorometer. Next week I will analyze the data with the help of my professor Dr. Kim. Outside of my internship, I spent time with my host family exploring San Diego at all its wonderful sights. We went on a hike and saw Tijuana from Cabrillo. In addition, we volunteered at the Greek Festival where we danced, and ate amazing Greek foods. I am so grateful for this wonderful experience, and can’t wait for next week.
