Hi, I’m Alise Hardie, an intern working with Dr.Petruska. This past week has been more project focused. I’ve been working mainly with Austin working on coding in python. It has been really interesting finding different ways to code the project and seeing it run and work is always a plus. (It doesn’t work most of the time.) It’s also cool to see the code I’ve been working on go into the main project. I’ve been working on the concrete portion of the project while Austin works on the limestone and when we are both done they will be used simultaneously and with the code I’ve helped build which is really neat.

All the interns were also asked to help unbox and test Jackal robots.

After we knew they all worked and they were all undamaged. Dr. Petruska gave Farrar and me the task of how we should mount a LiDAR camera to the top of the robot. A LiDAR camera is a camera that sends out pulses to create an image with the end image looking something like this:

We have figured out how we want the camera to be mounted, so our next task is ordering the materials to mount the cameras to all 5 Jackals.

Dr.Petruska took all the interns to the Earth Mechanics Institute and their rock boring laboratory which is all on campus. It was really cool to hear about all the different drills they have and they even have a Lunar Surface Laboratory.

All of their machines are to scale so that they can better understand them and it’s more applicable to mines. Some pictures of the Lab:

This is a drum with the drill bits covered in orange. This contraption is what Austin and I are helping to code for. The sensors will go on the back sides of the drill up against the drum. Someone else is connecting all the drill bits together and then having to build an antenna to then send the information from the sensors to a computer.

Things I’ve done outside of the internship is I went hiking around the flatirons, and my roommate took me to the farmers market again. I also went to a Grateful Dead show that was in Folsom Field on CU Boulder’s campus.
