My fourth week at the Rodham Institute has been lovely, as has been my time in D.C.! If you missed my last blog, I am an intern at the Rodham Institute housed within the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences in Washington D.C. The Rodham Institute strives for health equity in the D.C. area and participates in a myriad of community outreach programs.

This week I had the opportunity to shadow pulmonary doctors during their clinical rotations. Specifically, I shadowed Dr. Morgan Daleny and Dr. Vivek Jain. Before finding their office, I proceed to get lost in a fairly large hospital. Luckily, I was not too late to their clinical rotations and they had not yet started rotating either. The day began with a patient who had severe asthma and struggled walking 100 yards without needing to use their inhaler. The second patient was another (most likely) asthma patient who also suffered from shortness of breath. The doctors, however, cannot make a formal diagnosis of asthma without performing a lung function test. The third patient (most likely) suffered from sleep apnea. Once again, Dr. Vivek Jain could not make a formal diagnosis of sleep apnea without a sleep function test. The fourth and final patient, suffered from asthma, nasal drip, and allergies. The course of treatment for the final patient was an inhaler. Unfortunately with asthma, there aren’t many different courses of treatment available. Although I don’t plan to pursue medicine in the future, it sure was interesting to listen to Dr. Stanley and Dr. Jain’s opinion on the healthcare and hospital system. It is clear that there are definitely many policies that need to be changed in order to help the patient and doctor relationship. Not to mention, it is clear that policy changes would help the overall stress level of the doctors and hospital staff. The management side of things definitely leans more towards what I plan to pursue in the future.

Behind the scenes, I have been preparing for my two-part webinar in August by formulating questions I plan to ask the guest speakers.

Where the offices of Dr. Stanley and Dr. Jain were located.

As for my free time, I attended a Washington Nationals game on Friday…not the one on Saturday…thankfully. I also went to a Japanese barbecue restaurant where you order a myriad of meats and vegetables and then cook it yourself!

Japanese barbecue.
