My second week at Rodham has been good! If you missed my last blog, the the Rodham Institute is housed within the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences in Washington D.C. The Rodham Institute strives for health equity in the D.C. area.

I started off my week with an intern meeting with Ashanti Carter. Ashanti is particularly in charge of the webinars, newsletters, and website. As for the staff meeting, we went over the successful Juneteenth event the Rodham Institute was a part of last week. Then, each intern was designated a project to work on. I am working on a webinar that is in partnership with the nonprofit, Crutches. Crutches is an educational nonprofit that strives to educate young adults about the complexities of health insurance, given that young adults are the highest uninsured demographic in the U.S. The webinar will be a two part webinar. The first webinar will talk about the basics of health insurance. The second webinar will talk about what protection certain types of health insurance provide. One webinar will be on August 17th and the second will be on August 24th. As time leads up to the webinar, I will provide more information as to how one can access it.

Later in the week, I attend a medical grand rounds meeting. Grand rounds are a methodology of medical education. These grand rounds were about Acute Myocardial Infarction (MI). Acute MI is a blockage of blood flow to the heart. George Washington University Hospital is one of the leading hospitals in the country at treating Acute MI.does a great job at treating Acute MI and is one of the leading hospitals. As a result, GW was part of a study group called TIMI where they studied treatments for Acute MI. What I found particularly interesting about Acute MI was that the more cigarettes a smoker had, the lower the mortality rate.

As I wrap up my second week in Washington D.C. it is safe to say that most of the cicadas have gone away. Given that these were not the annual cicadas, but instead the cicadas that come out every 17 years, there were many. But, there’s a first for everything!

I went out to dinner with my host family on a very cute rooftop on Thursday! On my way to the rooftop we drove past the Peruvian Embassy, which was fun to see given that I’m a dual-citizen! I also went to the Air and Space Museum on Sunday.
