This week was the busiest week and I spent it coding pie charts and bar graphs in order to prepare for Noah’s presentation on Friday. I also spent a couple days going over the slides I was going to present for the conference. Our presentation is going to be given at the International Congress on Sustainability Science & Engineering (ICOSSE) conference.
Monday – Wednesday: These days were packed with coding. Everyday I coded at least 4 different graphs from various sets of data. In the end, I had a total of 12 different graphs, all with different sets of data.
Thursday: We met with Noah in the morning. I woke up late, so I was a few minutes late to my meeting. Fortunately, everyone in the group understood, because I stayed up coding. In the meeting, we ran through the presentation. I had three slides to present, the slides were on retrofitting each building type (Single-Family Detached, Multi-Family, and Mobile homes). I had so much anxiety about presenting, even though it wasn’t in front of any other people. I think it was the thought of having hundreds of people watching the presentation. The slide I had the most trouble with was the Mobile Homes slide. I didn’t know how to present the slide without literally copying every single word on the slide. So, my goal for that night was to get it together, and practice those three slides.
Friday: Today was the big day. The night before I had written some notes and taped them onto my computer. One of the good things COVID-19 has brought me: not presenting in front of hundreds of educated adults. We had to do a couple of runs. The first run through, I made the mistake of saying “oh I messed up” out loud. I also felt like I was going to pass out. I almost had a panic attack, but thankfully I kept monitoring my breathing. When presenting, you should go with the flow. The next couple runs, Noah had some trouble starting the presentation. The second full run, my sister walked in, and the audio wasn’t the best. The final run, was perfect. I did slip up on some of my words, but I went with the flow. After the presentation, we did our virtual high fives, then departed. It was the official end of the long, challenging weeks. My internship is supposed to end at the end of July, so I have one more week. I can’t wait to see what this last week has in store for me.
