Unfortunately my internship at the George Lab in La Jolla was delayed so Pinhead arranged for me to take a wilderness first responder course. It was a five-day course with 30 hours of studying beforehand. During the week we studied and learned more about the portions of the chapters of the book that we had to read before taking the course. We went over many different types of subjects about how to help an injured person without the use of Western medicine. I’m quite new to the world of medicine so a lot of the material that was taught to us was new to me. It was very interesting because I’ve never had hands-on experience on how to perform correct medical procedures on a person. I got to experience and to learn how to correctly clean and bandage a wound, as well as how to perform CPR. Because of this program I am now CPR certified.

We went over what to do in situations of temperature related injuries such as heat stroke and hypothermia. Essentially the big area of learning was any sort of wilderness related activity and how to treat the injuries that resulted from them. From 8:30am  to 5 PM we were in class, but afterwards we were free to do what we wanted to do as we were new to the city. My roommate Jordan and I spent our afternoons walking around town and exploring the beautiful town of Telluride. This course was very educational as well as very fun, and I can now proudly say that I am certified as a Wilderness First Responder.
