Though only halfway through, this internship has taught me more about protein structures and computer programs than I had ever previously imagined I would learn.
When I initially began this internship, I was aware that the six weeks would be split into two different segments. For three weeks, I would work with Professor Vladimir Yarov-Yarovoy and then after they were finished, we would work for the remainder of the duration with Professor Igor Vorobyov. The time has come for me to transition from one phase of this experience to another.
We have one final meeting on Monday with Professor Yarov-Yarovoy and Mr. Brandon Harris to discuss together the results of some of our programming jobs. Over this past week, we each submitted three to four different programs known as both ‘Relax functions’ and ‘GALigandDock’ programs.
As there are many different people using the same shared system in order to process their programs, the jobs are taking much longer to even begin than we had initially anticipated. GALigandDock does not take as much time and effort for the computer to process, so each of our jobs of that type is finished and ready for analysis. Below is an image of my program:
Once we have had this final meeting with Professor Yarov-Yarovoy, we will proceed to delve into a related but slightly different area of study with Professor Vorobyov. I am aware that this study will be centralized around the concept of molecular dynamics: a topic that I know as little about as I had about protein structures when I began with Professor Yarov-Yarovoy.
I am incredibly excited to move forward into a new area of study with another great teacher to guide my fellow students and myself, but I am also drastically pained by the prospect of terminating my learning process with Professor Yarov-Yarovoy and Mr. Brandon Harris.
I am hoping to continue working and contributing to their study even after my formal internship has ended, which would be both a great gift to me and, hopefully, a service to them.
I have been keeping myself mostly at home this past week. I, unfortunately, skinned my knees last weekend so I haven’t been able to bike around my neighborhood as they’ve been healing. To occupy my time, I have been reading, specifically, a book called The Things They Carry by Tim O’Brien, listening to my favorite podcasts, and knitting. I am knitting a blanket currently using the spare skeins of yarn I’ve collected over the years. I’ve attached an image of the blanket in its current form:
