Hello! I’m Christian Lindler and I’m doing an internship with the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics (LASP) which is a research organization at the University of Colorado Boulder. I will be completing a 12+ week long coding training program led by my mentor, David Wescott. Due to the coronavirus, we’re doing the program virtually, though we’re hoping that conditions will allow for the program to move to Boulder.

From the first day, I knew the internship was going to be very intense for me. The majority of the other students in the program are juniors in college studying computer science or aerospace engineering, so I was quite overwhelmed in the beginning. I started off by setting up a virtual machine on my computer and installing the linux operating system. This essentially allowed me to have a duplicate of a real computer on my laptop. Even though this process was only the setup for the rest of the program, I had never used a virtual machine or linux beforehand so it was complicated for me. However, David has been extremely helpful in catching me up to speed.

Next, we were given a tutorial on the python programming language which we have been using so far in the training. After that, we received three assignments to complete which I have been working on non-stop for the past two weeks. These have been especially challenging for me as I have little experience at the level of programming we’re doing. It’s been very difficult so far, but I already know so much more than I did on day one and I can only imagine how much I’ll learn by the end of the program.
