This week I continued my research on sea level rise and its impact on people and communities. My mentor, Mr. Strang, visited the Miami office on Thursday and Friday. I met with him and we discussed the research I have done. He is going to give a presentation next month about sea level rise and how it will effect us in the near future. I am going to take the data I have gathered and make a graphic for him to use in his presentation.

On Wednesday we had a geotechnical engineer give us a presentation over lunch. It was very interesting to see how engineers and architects must work together to be successful. He talked to us about different types of foundations and the advantages and disadvantages of each. He also talked about what the ground is made of in different parts of Miami. For example Miami Beach is sand for 6-10 feet, then a layer of silt for a couple of feet before reaching limestone. Other places in Miami have a limestone just a few feet below the surface. When building, it is important that the foundation is in limestone.

Last weekend I went to a Miami Marlins baseball game. The stadium has a roof that can slide open or closed. It was closed when I went because it had been raining. The Marlins beat The Pittsburgh Pirates 4-3.

On Tuesday my host family took me to eat at a restraint called The Time Out Market. It is sort of like a cafeteria but each booth is it’s own specialty restraint or signature chef. It had plenty of unique and interesting foods but I had my eye on a spicy chicken sandwich. It was vey good though.

I am excited to get to work for my remaining two weeks.
