Hello! My name is Danny Bynum and I attend Montrose High School. I am doing a four week long internship at Strang Design. They are an architecture firm based in Florida that focuses on modern environmental designs. They have three offices: Sarasota, Ft. Lauderdale, and Miami. I will be working in the Miami office throughout my internship.
My Mentor, Max Strang, gave me an assignment to research how sea level rise will effect the state of Florida. Over the past week I have been collecting data on sea level rise. I have researched how many people from the coast will be forced to move inland to some of Florida’s smaller cities. These “climate refugees” will be searching for a cheaper cost of living as well as moving away from the flooding. In the near future the population of these small inland cities may increase dramatically. It is vital that they have proper infrastructure to handle the surge of newcomers.
On Friday I traveled to the Venetian Islands with another intern named Andreas. Andreas is currently studying at Florida International University. The Venetian Islands are an upscale neighborhood in Biscayne Bay, right next to downtown Miami. We were sent there to take pictures of some of the properties Strang Design owns. The houses on the properties are going to be demolished so that new projects can be started. In order for the houses to be cleared for demolition the Design Review Board of Miami must look at the photos and make sure that the houses are not some extraordinarily amazing piece of architecture. It is all a very complicated process with many permits and committees, as Andreas explained to me during the drive. As well as taking pictures we also had to sketch a floor plan of one of the houses. It was a really interesting to see how some skills like drafting are used day to day
Over the next four weeks the Hans family will be hosting me here in Miami. Last weekend they took me to a Florence + The Machine concert at the American Airlines Arena which is where the Miami Heat play it was super fun and I had a great time!
The Hans live right next to a trolley line that I use to get to work. I ride the trolley for about 15 minutes before transferring to the metro rail. The office is only one stop away so its’s a quick ride! I can’t wait to continue my internship here in Miami for the next few weeks!
