For the final week of my internship, we were allowed time to wrap of our work and package the work of our entire internship.  We were tasked with making a video that explains the work we did at the university.  This was a great way to creatively present the work we did throughout the six weeks.  On Friday we showed the video to the entire CSER group.  When not working on the video we also continued some of our bench scale experiments.  We added a baffle to the bottom of our larger bucket because the CO2 concentrations were not uniform across the top of the bucket.  Instead, concentrations were higher on the inside rim of the bucket.  After looking at the data we found the baffle did very little to make the concentrations uniform.  This is not a big deal though, as the vent on the roof we are modeling has non-uniform concentrations as well.

On Tuesday we were off for Pioneer day.  This is a Utah state holiday that celebrates the day the first pioneers arrived in Salt Lake City.  This was a great opportunity to enjoy one last in the Salt Lake area.

We also got our CO2 sensor working and made the circuit it needs to run.  Unfortunately, the sensor is very unreliable.  Aaron, who has been directing us through the CO2 bucket experiments, also began the process of hooking up one of our Xbees to the Picarro CO2 sensor.  It was very cool to see the technology we had been working with starting to be implemented in the group’s work.  Initially, there were some problems with the data transmission because the baud rates needed to be the same across the Xbee, Picarro, and Serial monitor reader.  Troubleshooting this problem was not easy because the Picarro had a long restart time, and needed to be restated to reconfigure the settings.  On the last day, data from the Picarro was finally being transmitted to Aaron’s computer.

I am so grateful to the CSER group, and the Pinhead Institute for giving me this amazing opportunity.
