The last week flew by way faster than I would have liked it to. Monday we started our week off by doing our last breast reduction. On this case I got to scrub in for my very last time. Dr. Moorman took my hand at one point during the surgery and put his hand on top of mine and let me cut a tiny spot during the surgery. It was insane but awesome! It was sad knowing that this was our last day at the OR for possibly forever.
Monday night we also had a huge tropical storm that was thought to turn into a hurricane but luckily didn’t. It was raining so hard with thunder and lightning storms. The Moorman family was not prepared for this and hadn’t put up their hurricane shutters. The floor began to flood and we had to lay towels down and soak up the water and then wring them out until they finally got the shutters up and stopped the flooding. I was honestly scared but glad we didn’t lose power and that the storm didn’t turn into a hurricane.
Tuesday we had an office day for follow-ups as usual. We had one guy come in that had possibly stepped on a sea urchin, and had to squeeze his big toe after poking it with a needle and giving it a tiny incision. Green pus and infection came out of the toe. We then squirted peroxide into the incision and put a bandaid over the toe. I felt so bad for the guy. Other than that most the follow-ups were from previous breast reductions and some consult for people who would like to have one done.
Wednesday was another follow-up day. We saw the man with the toe again and did the same thing as we did on Tuesday. The toe looked a little better and less red meaning the swelling had also gone down. We also got to see the 16-year-old girl and removed her staples from her head. Kitty got to remove one and I got to remove one, it was beyond exciting.
Today we also got to learn how to draw medicine into the needle. It was easier than I thought it’d be, and super cool. We also got to inject the PA students with lidocaine, which is a numbing medicine. I got to do Kahlei and Kitty got to do Megan. Cool right!?
Thursday we woke up to a text from Dr. Moorman saying relax and enjoy your day, don’t worry about coming to the office. This day became our last beach day instead. We headed out with Stefán and Ava to the Buccaneer beach. This beach was our first and last beach on the island. We spent the day in the water, playing volleyball, and tetherball with a nice lunch at the restaurant there at the beach. It was a mixed relaxed day with the kiddos before we had to head home.
Friday was our last day. This day was a cosmetic day. Although we didn’t get to do anything this day we did get a lot of comments on how nice we all looked. Dr. Moorman decided we would all dress up due to it being all of our last days. A cosmetic day is a day full of juvederm and Botox injections. Many patients were very private about this. We got to watch three or four.
Saturday we were headed home. We spent our morning making sure we had all our things gathered and then said our goodbyes. I kept telling myself I had to hold it together and not cry but when I said goodbye to Stefán and Gabriela the tears broke free. Gabriela kept repeating to me that we would all see each other soon in Colorado. We then got into the truck with Dr. Moorman and headed to the airport. He followed us as far as he could and then we said good bye. Then we were off.
I am beyond thankful for all the Moorman family have done for us and all the opportunities we were given while on the island of Saint Croix. They were an amazing family that I will love and miss forever! Thank you Moorman’s.
