It was week five and I’m almost done with my internship. I only have nine days left and it’s the weirdest feeling in the world. I’m a mixture of happy to be going home, and never wanting to leave. My host family has been so kind to me they are most definitely a new part of my family. I have also made so many connections while at the center, with both people and the animals. I continue to learn more about these species and the individual animal.
This week one of my co-workers showed me how Zeus, our Western Screech Owl, loves to have his head scratched. I would never have guessed than an owl likes to have his head scratched. Or that one of our rabbits likes to be pet like a cat.
Most of my week was spent sitting with the rabbits talking to people who came to the center. In this time I had bunnies crawl all over me, bite my pants, and rub against me like a cat. Angle, our white bunny, starting doing this the second time I took them out. I first noticed while trying to feed her some hay, instead of eating it she rubbed her cheeks on it. She did this a couple time before I began petting her. She let me rub her cheeks, gums, and even her teeth. Similar to how a house cat might like. Never in my life have I seen a rabbit act like this, but she loved it. May I say it’s hard not to fall in love when an animal allows you to pet them like that.
The rest of my week was filled with my host brother and his friends. I feel like a part of the groups now. They are so nice and easy to get along with. You don’t always find that in a small town. A lot of times kids my age choose to be mean just because they can. But for these people they are the exact opposite. It makes you realize the kind of people you want to surround yourself with. These guys are so funny and make every little thing we do an event. Even going to Denny’s is an activity. It has been so fun going to places like Sky High, a trampoline place, and the beach at 11:00pm. This week is going to be bittersweet because I know it’s going to be so much fun, and that makes it even harder to leave.
I’ll keep you posted for next week! See you soon Colorado.
