My second week started off very calm. On Monday, I learned how to “float.” This involves using water to process soil or feature fill to recover tiny artifacts. Dried soil is placed on a screen, and water is gently bubbled up through the soil. Seeds, charcoal and other light material float to the top and are separated to be studied.
After that, we went on a trip the the neighboring fjord, Eyjafjörður, where we visited a site of the largest Pagan burial found in Iceland with ship burials and everything. Once we had finished our exclusive tour with the site manager, the group I was with drove an extra fifteen minutes to the city of 18,000 Akureyri. There we shopped around and found the Akureyri Backpackers Hostel and Burger place, where we had the best burger I have ever had!
On Tuesday, I returned to the island of Hegranes to core in Vatnskot down by a beautiful spring. On Wednesday, I went to Ás to core and help out line the home field of a settlement. Thursday, I continued to work at Vatnskot and explored the highlands of Hegranes. On Friday, I returned to Ás to core and dig holes, and stayed up late to see the midnight sun while walking on a beach.
Saturday was the beginning of my first two-day weekend. We went on a rocky adventure to the small town of Siglufjörður where I went to the Herring and Folk Music Museum. Siglufjörður is possibly one of the most beautiful places I have ever been if you ever find yourself in Iceland I would recommend to the highest degree that you spend a day there.
Today, I have stayed mostly local. I went to a flea market and surfed the internet for the first time in weeks. Overall my internship in Iceland is the greatest thing that could have happened to me this summer, and I am enjoying every second of it!
