I started my Pinhead Internship at the University of Colorado, Boulder (CU) Center for Innovation and Creativity on Monday, June 5.
My mentors are Audrey Davis, Timothy Helmuth, and Greg Giordano. They all work in the CU Change Lab as part of the Department of Psychology and Neuroscience. They’re currently studying how exercise affects the brains of people, mostly older people aged 65+.
On my first and second day I had to do some online training for the Institutional Review Board (IRB) and Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPA). I had to pass the quizzes with an 80 percent or higher to begin working in the lab.
On my third day, I finally got to work with some of the volunteers and their exercise routines to collect data and eventually see how exercise affects the brain in people aged 65+.
On my last day of this week, I went to a Graded Exercise Test (GXT). First, the volunteer was walked through a consent form to participate in this research program. They would read through everything and decide whether they wanted to join or not. If they signed the consent form and decided to participate, they would then do a Graded Exercise Test to evaluate their heart’s response to exercise, and then a doctor clears them if they pass the GXT.
So far, I have learned the ethics of patient privacy, rights, and confidentiality and how to record the exercise data for later studies.
