Week three was a lot of fun. Even though we did not do a lot, the events that we encountered were very interesting. We started off the week with a partial amputation of a cows hoof. This cow was presented on the prior Friday for lameness in her left hind leg. After getting some x-rays of the area around that foot, they discovered some abnormalities in the ankle joint. The clinicians determined the best route of procedure would be to amputate her lateral claw. This surgery took place on Tuesday.
The next exciting thing to happy was a case of anemia in a llama that does not have a clear cause. They did a number of tests to attempt to find the reason for her illness. In one of the tests they found what seemed to be stones in one of the llama’s stomachs (C3). On Friday, she was taken into surgery. The surgery went well, but they did not find what they were looking for. Rather than stones, there was a significant amount of sand. This keeps the cause of her anemia a mystery. She is still being monitored and tested by the vet students and clinicians.
Other than the academic endeavors, my host family took me to visit Montgomery. It was fun to see the capitol building of Alabama and we went to a semi-pro baseball game.
