Double white dwarf mass transfer

Max and joined another project this week. We are still looking at X-ray binary systems, but we have also started running simulations on Quest dealing with double white dwarf binaries. There are only thirteen discovered systems, so it is very easy to cover all of them. Similar to XRBs we are looking at how they transfer mass, and specifically what effect that has on the spin and orbit of the stars. Currently we are running lower intensity simulations using larger time steps, but next week we should be shortening to ten year jumps which will require more time, and provide more precise and complete data.

Looking towards Chicago

I was lucky enough to get out on the lake for the first time this week. My host was generous enough to share his boat, and has made it available to use now that we have set it up. We were considering wake boarding but it was evening by the time we got on the water so instead we relaxed and followed the shore towards Chicago. I was worried I might get sea sick, because I don’t remember the last time I was on a boat, but the experience was nothing but pleasant the whole time. The lake conditions next week are supposed to be perfect, so hopefully we will go again.
