It is crazy how quickly time begins to pass. I have only been here in D.C. for a few short weeks, and already they are blurring together into a culmination of amazing experiences and opportunities that have given me a completely different perspective on the world.
After a fairly uneventful but nice fourth of July, Dr. El-Bayoumi, the founding Director of the Rodham Institute, returned from her vacation time. It has been an honor to work with her and see the inner workings of a health professional. I spent the week finishing the coding of the See the City You Serve results, an event the Rodham hosted in June. The results will be discussed with a statistician this coming Wednesday.
My favorite days of the week have definitely become Wednesday’s and Thursday’s. I have the opportunity to shadow medical residents in the resident clinic as they assess their patients. This week I worked with Dr. Hossain, an amazing third year resident. In between patient visits, her and Dr. El-Bayoumi kindly walked me through treatment risk stratification, the uses of various types of medication, and explained disorders such as Myasthenia Gravis, a condition that effects muscles and nerve synapses. Thursday was the Grand Rounds lecture held weekly through the George Washington Medical Department. This week the featured speaker was Aileen Chang, who I have worked with on data coding for the Rodham, on the mosquito born Zika virus.
It’s crazy that my time here in D.C. will be over in just a few weeks now! In the meanwhile, I have been trying to check a few of the last must-do’s of the list, including a concert I attended, exploring Georgetown, and visiting the Museum of Natural History, which is definitely one of my favorites.
