Hi, I am Sam Scheibler. This summer I am interning in the Zhang Lab at the University of California, San Diego, working with my mentors, William Shi and Maryam Jafari, on a genomics project. Throughout the next couple of weeks, we will be closely observing and examining abnormal cells.
I drove down to La Jolla last week. I will be staying with Ms. Reiss, who has kindly offered to host me. Her house is located right next to UCSD campus – a 15 to 20 minute walk to the lab. Ms. Reiss has two little dogs, Little Bear and Jerry, and a couple of big fish that swim in the pond in front of the house. As of right now, all I need to do is take the dogs out on a walk everyday.
My first task at the lab was to complete all the mandatory onboarding readings, etc., which entail everything from lab procedures to giving a specific outline of how confidential information must be treated and how it may be disclosed under US law. Certification and the required trainings are essential as I otherwise wouldn’t be allowed to work with certain samples and bio-hazardous materials.
Together with the lab, we played volleyball on the front lawn Friday after work, which was a lot of fun. And on Saturday we did the potato chip hike (Mount Woodson Trail). The trail is rather well known for a piece of suspended rock that looks somewhat like a chip. It was amazing. Moreover, the sense of community in this lab is incredible, with all members wanting to help and drive research forward, which makes working here a real joy.
